SCHEDULE

Chicago Project on Security and Threats

From burning library collections and beheading antiquities scholars to widespread destruction of cultural heritage sites, ISIS is the major modern threat to cultural property.  However, ISIS also exploits ideas from Western culture in disturbing ways.   Based on his analysis of 1,400 ISIS videos, Professor Pape shows how ISIS prominently exploits Western ideas of the hero made famous by Joseph Campbell and popularized by George Lucas to recruit individuals in North America, Europe and Australia to their cause.
