New Directions in Fish and Wildlife Service Cultural Site Monitoring and Protection

Developed and implemented in the aftermath of the occupation of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the Disturbance Monitoring and Protection (DMaP) program is a cultural resource monitoring program that allows Federal Wildlife Officers to actively monitor cultural sites on the ground on an annual or cyclical basis to help with detection and prevention of looting. In 2022, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) hired a Headquarters Law Enforcement Archaeologist, a unique position to both FWS and the Department of the Interior, to oversee the DMaP program. This position will coordinate with officers in the field as well as the FWS Regional Historic Preservation Officers.
