Michael Thornton

Security Consultant, Smithsonian Institution

Michael Thornton is a law enforcement professional with over 31 years of combined experience in the District of Columbia and the National Capitol Region. In 2019, after 27+ years of service, Michael retired from the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. During his career, Michael managed several diverse teams responsible for special events, incident command and response, community outreach, crime analysis, environmental crimes, civil rights and corruption investigations, and hostage / crisis negotiations. After a short “retirement vacation,” in 2019, Michael joined the Smithsonian Institution where he provides daily intelligence, situational awareness, public safety, and other information to the OPS Leadership to mitigate risks to the Institution. Michael has also served as a guest speaker at OPS Health and Safety Town Halls and is an active participant in the Council of Government Intelligence Subcommittee (National Capital Region), Law Enforcement Partners Briefings, Mall Security Working Group, Northeast Corridor Rail Intelligence Working Group, and the United States Attorney’s Office, Hate Bias Task Force.
